I have a degree in computer science and recently earned a master's degree in information systems. I've worked as a systems analyst for an information-technology company and interned as a technical-systems administrator. When I started to look for a job in September, I had a difficult time. I know that the economy's tight, but I sent out many resumes and got only a few interviews and no job offers. What should I do?

Daniel's advice

It's clear that you have the academic qualifications to find a good job, so the problem lies in your approach. Sending out resumes may help you feel like you're actively conducting your job hunt, but it's one of the least successful ways to find a job. You'll need a different strategy. Talk with people you've met, perhaps from your last job or your master's program, and ask them how they got their first few jobs when they had little experience. It's not important what field they're in. You want to learn about the process they used. Find out what techniques were most effective and then apply them to your job hunt.

Even in an economic downturn, people still find jobs, so get creative and use strategies that work. You might also consider pursuing part-time opportunities or even a temporary position, which would allow you to get your foot in the door and show an employer what you're capable of doing. If your work is good and you fit in well with others in the organization, you may be able to convince them to hire you as a full-time employee.
