I'm 66 years old and in good health with the exception of my disability as an arm amputee. I've been employed since I was 21 until October 2000 and don't have a college degree. My experience has been in military- and civilian-logistics management and sales. I'm searching for a sales position in the U.S. or Europe. Although I've applied for openings listed on several job sites, I haven't received any replies. Is it because of my age or something else?

Daniel's advice

Without more information, it's difficult to determine why you haven't gotten any job offers. One possibility may be your strategy. Jobs posted online often generate a lot of competition, so your resume may be getting lost in the shuffle. It also seems unlikely that your age or disability account for your problem, since neither should be apparent on your resume.

That said, start a new job search using your contacts to meet people who make hiring decisions. These many include executives at the companies where you completed sales transactions when working for previous employers. For resources and guidance, meet with advisers from your local Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) chapter. Also, find out if the military branch you worked for in the past offers any job-referral services.

It's possible you'll face discrimination when you get to the interview stage. Employers may exert bias due to fears that older workers won't perform as well as younger ones or will suffer from health problems. To overcome these stereotypes, stress the values that make you a good employee. Detail your attendance record to prove you haven't missed work due to your disability or health. Point out that you're punctual and stay extra hours to get a job done. Also, show your contribution in terms of dollars made or saved or errors avoided in your previous jobs.
